H\u00c0 N\u1ed8I \u2014 Counterfeit products have been witnessing an upsurge recently as counterfeiters\u00a0move online to hide behind the anonymity of the Internet.<\/p>\n

Tr\u1ea7n H\u1eefu Linh, Director of the General Department of Market Management, admitted that fraudulent trade was rampant in the first six months of 2022.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The department inspected 30,000 facilities and detected 17,300 counterfeiting cases, imposing total fines of VN\u0110113 billion (US$4.8 million). Of which, 54 cases were reported to the police for further investigation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Counterfeiters target\u00a0a wide range of products, from cigarettes and cosmetics to petrol and fertilisers.\u00a0They leverage e-commerce to conceal their illegal practices\u00a0and have\u00a0delivery firms transport their\u00a0products without the firms’ knowledge of inauthenticity.<\/p>\n

“Many consumers are ready\u00a0to buy\u00a0an item they know is a knockoff\u00a0to have\u00a0a cheap copy of a brand name. Fraudulent trade is hard to root out”, he explained.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Nguy\u1ec5n H\u1eefu Tu\u1ea5n, Head of the E-commerce Management Office under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, underscored the uncooperativeness of many genuine firms as a factor encouraging fraudulent trade.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Firms know that their products have been counterfeited, but they cover it up. They sometimes\u00a0appear uncooperative, withholding vital\u00a0information from the authorities,”\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The head urged\u00a0firms to rely on technology to defend themselves commercially. He suggested anti-counterfeiting stamps and tracking codes to help consumers spot genuine products more efficiently.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He also called on consumers not to\u00a0buy\u00a0name-brand products for pennies on the dollar since such purchases incentivise counterfeiting.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ph\u1ea1m Qu\u1ed1c L\u1ed9c, Director of the URC Hanoi Factory, was concerned that counterfeiting had\u00a0been causing substantial financial damage\u00a0to consumers and reputational damages to producers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To keep the issue in check, he revealed that his factory had invested massively in technology to produce packaging\u00a0that is difficult to counterfeit.<\/p>\n

It has also launched media campaigns to help buyers distinguish between fake and genuine products.<\/p>\n

Additionally, it has cooperated closely with the authorities by\u00a0giving\u00a0tip-offs\u00a0that could lead to ring\u00a0busts.<\/p>\n

B\u00f9i Kim Hi\u1ebfu, Head of the Civil Code Department under the Institute of Legal Research on Business and Consumer Protection, noted that a fully-fledged legal framework had been implemented to prevent counterfeiting.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Firms are recommended to file for industrial design, trademark and patent protections to have their products uniquely recognised in the market.<\/p>\n

They are also recommended to hold informative\u00a0seminars to encourage consumers to say no to\u00a0products with unclear origins.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Firms must claim\u00a0ownership to their trademarks through a registration of trademark protection under the Intellectual Property Law,”\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n

Nguy\u1ec5n \u0110\u0103ng Sinh, Chairman of the Vietnam Association for Anti-Counterfeiting and Trademark Protection, underscored registered trademarks\u00a0as a significant legal ground for product protection.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unfortunately, many firms fail\u00a0to register their trademarks, leaving their products vulnerable to counterfeiting.<\/p>\n

The chairman urged firms to waste no time on trademark registration as it is the only way to have their products legally\u00a0protected. \u2014 VNS<\/p>\n
