Seminar “Current situation and solutions to improve capacity of handling patent applications”

On June 15, 2019, in Quang Ninh province, the Patent Examination Center which is a department of the NOIP held a Seminar with the topic “Current situation and solutions to improve capacity of handling patent applications”.

At the Seminar, 5 major topics were selected and discussed, including the following topics: Current situation and solutions to improve capacity of handling patent applications; Current situation and solutions for handling patent applications of Vietnamese applicants; Process of handling PPH requests; Updating and supplementing knowledge for examiners through explanations of technology and practical visits; Adjusting the regulation of application approval that authorizing the Departments to sign some documents.

On average in 5 years from 2014 to 2018, the number of patent applications has increased continuously, averaging 8.45% per year. The NOIP’s capacity of handling applications has also improved and increased significantly, averaging 7.025% in the same period. Especially, in 2018, the National Office of Intellectual Property has focused on addressing applications of Vietnamese applicants and obtained positive results.

Currently, the program to share examination results (PPH) between IP offices is becoming a common trend in the world and has a certain contribution to improve capacity of handling patent applications. In the first half of 2019, the NOIP continued to sign the PPH program in Phase 2 with the Japanese Patent Office (JPO) and tested the PPH program with the Korea Intellectual Property Office (KIPO).
